SWAP was founded to eliminate abandonment and blight in the neighborhoods of Providence. Although our mission to provide quality, affordable homes has not changed, the dynamics of Providence have changed. Yesterday SWAP fought to bring people back to the city. Today SWAP is fighting to insure that there are homes for families at all incomes to live in the city.

SWAP has multiple housing options to offer low and moderate income families. We define family as anyone in need of an affordable, safe home. And, though all of our programs have income guidelines, we serve a diverse definition of family and a wide range of income levels.

Affordable rental apartments are the most in demand of all the programs we offer. These are followed by single and multi family homes for sale. Condominiums are new to our menu for housing as are neighborhood commercial business spaces. And while we continue to renovate older houses and buildings, we now have a very large selection of new homes built on those vacant lots created by 1970’s demolition.

Sustainable communities are what we are striving for today. Work close to home and live close to work. Walk to the grocery store and eliminate a second car by using public transportation. Sit on your front porch and greet your neighbors as they pass by. Mixed-use buildings that include businesses on the ground floor and residences above are being planned around the city. We are involved in all of this and more.

In 30 years we have grown in the number of people who work with us. But we have also grown by meeting the challenges that face the residents of the neighborhoods we serve. While income guidelines apply in all of our programs, the range of incomes that we serve has expanded as Rhode Island has reached the top of the list as the most expensive place to live in our country.

We are not one size fits all. We adjust to your size and your needs. We encourage you to contact us.
